Title: Soil and Groundwater Remediation

Client: Miller Brewing Company
Fort Worth, Texas

The objective of this project was to obtain a State regulatory agency approved closure at this diesel fuel contaminated site, with no further institutional controls. To accomplish this objective, remedial activities to remove highly contaminated soil, to the extent practicable under difficult access conditions, were completed, along with additional site assessment and risk-based fate and transport modeling to meet the requirements for closure under the Texas Natural Resources Conservation Commission (TNRCC) Risk-Based Corrective Action process. Initial tasks included soil sampling and analysis, excavation of 568 cubic yards of petroleum contaminated subsurface material, on-site soil-vapor extraction (SVE), air sparging bio-remediation, seepage liquid removal, and off -site waste disposal. Subsequent tasks included design and installation of long term soil vapor extraction remediation systems, and fate and transport modeling. The fate and transport modeling was used to predict the contaminant concentration at a surface water stream located 2,500 feet from the source and at a water well located 1.8 miles from the source. An Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Risk Assessment model was used to document that the remaining mobile TPH would not result in contaminant levels that would pose a risk or a hazard to the nearest surface and well water receptors, according to TNRCC criteria.

Accomplishments: Using the combination of "hot spot" removal and in-situ bio-venting technologies, the site was successfully closed in two years. ETAS Corporation was able to accomplish this Clean Closure because TNRCC specified hazardous situations were successfully remediated.
