Title: Operation of Chromium Precipitation, Micro-filtration, and Filter Press Systems

Client: NASA Johnson Space Center
Houston, Texas

ETAS Corporation was contracted to design a full-scale treatment system for treating waste streams resulting from photographic and electroplating operations to meet NPDES discharge criteria. To achieve project objectives, a 5 gpm pilot-scale wastewater treatment system was designed, fabricated, tested, and operated to perform pre-design treatability studies. This skid-mounted system consisted of a chemical precipitation reactor, a microfiltration unit, followed by activated carbon polishing, and a filter press for sludge dewatering. A total of 28 bench tests and 6 pilot treatability tests were performed to evaluate the conceptual design. The results confirmed that NASA's photographic and electroplating rinse water could be treated chemically followed by solid-liquid separation and sludge dewatering. Based on the treatability study results, ETAS Corporation then developed the full-scale treatment system engineering designs, including all engineering drawings and specifications. The specifications described the general performance standards and provided a listing of equipment to be provided by sellers, equipment specifications, instrumentation and controls, skid structure, cleaning, painting, tests and inspection, shipment procedures, and QA/QC inspection procedures.

Accomplishments: ETAS Corporation successfully used bench-scale and pilot-scale treatability studies to design a full-scale waste treatment system for treating waste streams resulting from photographic and electroplating operations to meet NPDES discharge criteria.
